The Hawaii state quarter is a coin issued by the United States Mint in
2008 as part of the 50 State Quarters program. The reverse of the
quarter features an image of King Kamehameha I, the first ruler of the
Kingdom of Hawaii, holding his staff known as the "Kahili" and extending
his hand in a gesture of peace.
 In the background, there is a
silhouette of the state of Hawaii and the inscriptions "Hawaii" and
"1959" (the year Hawaii became a state). The design was created by Don
Everhart. The obverse side features the portrait of George Washington.
