"Mick Rock Photo Exhibition"

The light and shadow of rock stars and their era, captured by photographer Mick Rock.

July 18th (Friday) - August 28th (Thursday), 2003
Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography

An era when movements like glam rock and new wave transcended the boundaries of music and exerted an overwhelming influence on art, fashion, and various other fields. This exhibition looks back at a moment in the 20th century, filled with a short but intense brilliance, through the eyes of photographer Mick Rock.

Rock stars who made an overwhelming impact from the late 60s to the 80s: Syd Barrett, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Queen... Mick Rock stared at and continued to document their talent.
This photo exhibition effectively utilizes original prints by Mick Rock himself, as well as videos, installations, lighting work that evokes the stage, and dynamic typography.

Mick Rock / Photographer
Born Michael David Rock in London. He began taking photographs after being captivated by Syd Barrett during his university days. He later attended the London Film School, but through work with Hipgnosis, Rolling Stone magazine, and others, he began photographing musicians such as Pink Floyd and David Bowie.
From the late 60s to the early and mid-70s, he photographed many pop/rock musicians, mainly glam rock artists, including album cover art.
Representative artists include Queen, David Bowie, Lou Reed, and Iggy Pop.
In 1977, he moved his base of operations to New York and was one of the first to be involved with artists in the underground scene, such as Blondie, Talking Heads, and the Ramones.
